Redbird sails between wind-ploughed
clouds, trailing sparks through
rumbling sky.

His watchful eye droops on a single
silky stalk
reflects humming mountains
ruffled seas
a small boy adrift on a river of moonlight.

He sees me, Redbird
winks his one blue eye
solemn as a sphinx
sailing past on crimson wings
gliding a green current
swift as the shiver of birch trees.

He tosses a mottled feather
in my open mouth–
not a promise, an
invitation
from the riotous watermelon horizon.
