Sunday Poem #1. Heart and Head: A Duet

Heart’s small voice sings

we
us
this
yes!

Heart wears itself on its own sleeve; it
delights in slippery mud and fallen petals.
It kisses Head’s myriad gray pleats and
great, furrowed brow. Head mutters: you

time-waster, mooner, you singer who can’t
reach high c; mistake-maker, incontinent
bleeder; giver of gifts you cannot
afford; blissed-out, undiscriminating,
lacerated fool

Yes! sings heart

bird
flower
rock
fish
star

    This is delicious!

I felt like I was riding a wave as I read it, and moving deeper with every word.

    Pure gorgeousness.

    Thanks for sharing this.

  3. Deb Owen says:

    You’re so fantastic.

    But ya know?
I have one of those minds that says, “Yeah. So I can’t sing a high-C. The band can change the key, ya know.” (Cuz they can.)
    ;-)

    All the best!

How beautiful! Your poem made me smile.

It reminds me a bit of a painting I’m working on where strings lead from a woman’s heart and mind and become a storm-cloud. :-)

A little late to the party. First of all, as a newbie reader and someone who has an appreciation for beautiful things, I just wanted to say, “What and absolutely gorgeous, aesthetically beautiful blog.

And your poetry? As a writer, it spoke to me. I am constantly struggling between “heart and head.” But when I go with “heart,” that is when I hear most from readers who say I have connected with them.

    Thank you for this gift.

  7. Deb, yes, the band can change key. :-)

Leah, I’m glad the poem made you smile. Come back here and post a link to your painting, when it’s ready, if you feel like it. I’d love to see it.

Judy, welcome! Yes, heart brings connection, and all that other good stuff.

  8. Again, gorgeousness.

I laughed out loud a little bit at Head’s mutterings to Heart: mooner…blissed-out, undiscriminating, lacerated fool. Maybe it struck me as funny because this is what my Head sounds like talking to my Heart, too. :)
